New school sports facility
Site strip and remediation
Key Information
Client: Thomas Armstrong
Site: St Joseph’s School
Start Date: July 2017
Programme: Three weeks
Status: Completed
The site is in the centre of Workington and forms part of St Joseph’s RC High School.
Remediation enabling works were required to enable the development by lead contractors Thomas Armstrong for a new extension incorporating a sports facility.
The site logistics were challenging given the proximity of the school, its students and staff and existing sports facility and nearby residents.
The key environmental risks were associated with hazardous tarmacadam, along with ash and clinker material highlighted in the site investigation reports.
The surface materials were segregated on site. After this they were disposed of at two licensed waste facilities under duty of care.
The new facilities, including a sports hall, classroom, changing rooms, PE office, and a multi-gym were opened in November 2017.
