Site remediation and re-engineering of former landfill site
Key Information
Client: Thomas Armstrong
Site: Former car park Carlisle
Start Date: May 2017
Programme: Twelve weeks
Status: Completed
A former car park and historic landfill site in Carlisle is earmarked for a major retail development.
Before the high-profile development could be started remedial enabling works were required.
The site was challenging due to the unknown ground conditions and sensitivity to the local environment.
The site is surrounded by businesses with a high level of traffic.
The key environmental risks were unknown materials in the ground along with ammonia in the groundwater.
This was highlighted in the site investigation reports.
The surface materials were segregated and processed on site and re-engineered. Excessive materials were removed under duty of care before the site was handed over to contractors Thomas Armstrong.
